In July 2017 USPG hosted a General Synod Fringe event looking at climate justice….
John Selwyn Gummer, Lord Deben, and other guest speakers urged members of the Church of England to get vocal about climate justice.
Speaking at USPG’s Fringe event at General Synod in York, Lord Deben, who is Chair of the independent Committee on Climate Change, said the time for action is now.
Also speaking at the Fringe event were Claire Foster-Gilbert, Director of Westminster Abbey Institute, and the Rt Revd Dr Steven Croft, Bishop of Oxford.
The event was chaired by Jo Musker-Sherwood, who is the Chair of USPG-funded climate lobbying specialists Hope for the Future.
Gwen Mtambirwa, of USPG, said: ‘It was very encouraging to see so many Synod members turn out. It showed that people are engaged and interested in learning more about climate change and justice and what the church can do.
‘We hope now that people will engage deeper with climate justice. There was advice on how to lobby your MP on climate issues and other practical ideas. If we pull together, the church can really make a difference and literally help to save the planet.’
The event also saw the launch of a USPG guide to help inspire congregations to engage with climate issues.
The guide, entitled Faith in a Changing Climate, contains prayers, a bible study and ideas for action. You can read it online or order printed copies for your church.
