China

Anglicanism came to China via a number of different Churches and mission agencies. In the 1840s missionaries from the American Protestant Episcopal Church Mission and the Church Missionary Society established work. SPG (now USPG) began work in China in 1863, sending a priest and a medical missionary. After these first arrivals, churches and missionary societies were active all over China with the SPG having a stronger focus in North China. Medical missions and women’s work had a significant influence.

The Chung Hua Sheng Kung Hui (CHSKH - Holy Catholic Church in China or Anglican-Episcopal Province of China) was established in 1912 as a merger of these efforts. In 1950/1951 missionaries were forced to leave China and by 1958 all activities of the CHSKH had ended.

The China Christian Council and the Three-Self Patriotic Movement are USPG’s current partners. Through the 1980s and 1990s in collaboration with the Amity Foundation – an independent Chinese voluntary organisation for Christian involvement in Chinese society through education, health and welfare - USPG sent a number of teachers with the Amity Teaching Programme. Engagement with China continues in a spirit of ecumenism through the China Forum group formed by the Churches Together in Britain and Ireland.
