The Church of the Province of Myanmar (CPM)

Anglican military and civil chaplains were stationed in Myanmar (Burma) from 1825 and with their encouragement the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel (SPG, now USPG) began work in 1854. The first missionary, TA Cockey, taught in a school at Moulmein, later joined by the long serving teacher and priest, John E Marks. They were followed by many clergy and educationalists who the SPG continued to send over many decades.

The first national bishops, Rt Revd Francis Ah Mya, and Rt Revd John Aung Hla were consecrated in Calcutta in 1949.  In 1966, following the forced departure of all missionaries, Bishop Francis became the first national diocesan bishop of Rangoon Diocese. In 1970, he was installed as the first Archbishop of the newly formed province.

Over the years, the relationship has been strengthened between USPG and CPM through mission, education, healthcare, and leadership development initiatives.

The Church currently has six dioceses and two missionary dioceses. The Most Revd Stephen Than Myint Oo is the current Archbishop of CPM.

In the face of restrictions and political uncertainty, the Church continues to demonstrate the love of Jesus Christ as it serves marginalised communities. It is a vibrant church with active ministries among all sectors including youth, women and children.
